1930’s Rococo Embroidery
This is one of the finest examples of 1930’s embroidery that I have come across.

This gorgeous antique floral hand embroidery on a bright red fine wool has been repurposed and made into a stylish contemporary cushion.
The borders have been utilised and the addition of patches made from the flower emblems fill the entire piece with colour.
The cushion is piped with a lilac rayon fabric and backed with a red striped silk that echoes all the colours of the front.

Of grey unrest is moving across the land,
I leave the book upon a pillowed chair
And walk from window to closed window, watching
Boughs strain against the sky
And think again, as often when the air
Moves inward toward a silent core of waiting,
How with a single purpose time has traveled
By secret currents of the undiscerned
Into this polar realm. Weather abroad
And weather in the heart alike come on
Regardless of prediction.
Between foreseeing and averting change

A Box of Delights
I can’t remember where I found it or exactly how long ago ~ it must be over 25 years ago that I came across an old cigar box containing all of the submissions to a Bristol publication’s colouring in competition probably from the early 1960’s.
At that time many households would have included a budgie as a part of the family.

Abandoned
When I make up a vintage piece of embroidery I often get a sense of the person who created it many years ago.
This piece is a bit different because it’s so beautiful and yet it’s unfinished…many stories have spun around as I stitch. Each ending different.
Made in the spring of life with such devotion and preparedness.
Nothing could have prepared this fine needlewoman for the future of her skillful endeavour and I hope that I have paid a suitable tribute to her by mounting the unfinished piece, along with the webbing that stretched the fabric, onto a soft pinky brown silk, using a length of frilled trim, kept for years waiting for the right project.
Whoever comes to own this beautiful piece of work, abandoned before completion, will probably mull upon the possible tale it tells as I have…with the freedom to change its story to suit oneself.

Lupin Diagonal Display Embroidery
Here’s one of two variations of a Lupin with Phlox wool work embroidery from the 1930/40s. The two panels were stored for many moons and found in excellent condition. I have washed them to remove the linen’s dressing from new and the effects of years’ of storage.

This fantastic crewel embroidery was found unfinished ~ begun in the 1930’s and now completed and revitalised in 2025.
I think that the original needle person only had a limited selection of crewel wool colours so that alongside the stitching, the colour palette needed pepping up!

60’s Chic
This is an exciting timepiece of embroidery – the person who fashioned this design lived in the NOW of that time. The colours are so contemporary and all embroidered on barkcloth too.
The embroidered panel is mounted onto a luxurious cotton velvet (also from that time) and it’s backed with the same and enhanced by a dark blue wool piping.

Lupin and Phlox embroidery
Here’s one of two variations of a Lupin and Phlox wool work embroidery from the 1930/40s. The two panels were stored for many moons and found in excellent condition. I have washed them to remove the linen’s dressing from new and the effects of years’ of storage.
This cushion shows an upright central spray of flowers on a good quality mid-weight natural linen – it is complemented by a salmon pink piping and a lilac/blue Metis linen union hand dyed back.

I saw a unicorn today.
It first appeared in the far distance on the misty bay.
The dog and I stood to watch as the beast moved along the line of the outgoing tide towards us.
Sunlight shone rainbow droplets through a flying mane and flag end tail as its thunderous hooves crashed through the gently rippling water. As it came closer I was filled with fear; what I had thought to be a fine white horse was this wondrous creature, with its sharply pointed horn gleaming ike a sword carved from mother of pearl.
We stood stock still, frozen as the unicorn veered tumultuously towards us – passing so close that we sensed the heat from its gleaming flanks and felt the breeze in its wake.
With explosive force it mounted the shingle bank, blasting pebbles in a roaring avalanche as it clambered the steep wall of stones.
Then it was gone.
As we dazedly walked towards home and safety. I realised that it had spoken to me as it passed, burying its message in my mind.
I am powerful resourceful and emblematic.
I am the giver of life
The curer of disease
I am alone, live alone, travel alone…
I don’t exist.

Peggy
This drawing was completed in 1982, when I travelled to California. I had been a fan of the Big Band singer Peggy Lee and came across an image of her on an old album cover.
That album embodied my filmic existence in San Diego.

This drawing was competed in 1982 when I lived in San Diego. It is from an image that I discovered of Lucille Ball when she was young.
Having been a great fan of “I Love Lucy”as a child – I couldn’t resist. And the image carries some of the disquiet and feelings of misplacement that I felt during these days.
